About Oshino-mura

Introduction of Oshino-mura

There is Oshino-mura in the foot of southeast Mount Fuji of Yamanashi. Yamanakako-mura is to Fujiyoshida-shi, the south northeast to Tsuru-shi, northwest, and Oshino-mura is included in Minamitsuru with Fujikawaguchiko-machi, Nishikatsura-cho, Narusawa-mura, Yamanakako-mura, Doshimura. It is to Mount Fuji (3,776 meters above sea level), the east to 936 meters above sea level among the mountains such as Mt.Ishiwariyama (1,413 meters above sea level) to the south, and two rivers of Katsuragawa river and Sin-Nashogawa river stream down east and west. In Oshino-mura, approximately 8 kilometers, the north and south are approximately 4 kilometers east and west, and, as for the total area, there is 25.05 square kilometers of area. In the village is divided into Uchino district and Shibokusa district, and approximately 3,400 households, approximately 9,200 people (as of May, 2013) live. The crops (highland vegetable) which there was on plateau are made unless it is U.S. made because Oshino-mura in the foot of Mount Fuji is village of 963 meters above sea level plateau and are sent to each place. In addition, we are surrounded by beautiful nature represented by Oshino Hakkai and tension fir tree forest covered with the same kind of trees and are famous as sightseeing spot. When it is summer, many tourists come. Furthermore, we make use of rich nature and convenience to transportation of Oshino-mura, and plastic and factories of robot increase.

The history of village

Jomon period (approximately 6,000 years ago)

Because 36 places of remains are in village including large rice mortar thing and small rice mortar which early earthenware vessel was found in near Shikinomori, the Oshino park in Jomon period, it is thought that person has already lived in village from Jomon period.
In addition, most of the villages are said to have been big lake called Lake Utsu.

Ancient (1,500 years ago) - Middle Ages (400 years ago)

By great eruption of Mount Fuji of 800 (Christian era 800 years), understand Lake Utsu to Lake Oshinoko and two of Lake Yamanaka and is said to be when many villages were swallowed by lava. Oshino Sengen shrine was founded afterwards in 807 (Christian era 807 years) to quiet eruption of Mount Fuji. Volcanic activity of Fuji was said to have continued from late 900 to mid-1000 in the Christian era, and village was formed in Oshino Basin which was the bottom of a lake of Lake Utsu (Lake Oshinoko) afterwards.

Early modern times (400 years ago) - modern times (the Meiji era)

Water of Lake Utsu (Lake Oshinoko) spent long time and died, but some spring ponds which assumed underflow water of Mount Fuji water source remained. The representative thing is Oshino Hakkai. Fuji Buddhist (general mountaineer except exerciser) climbed Mount Fuji as Edo period charges, historic remains hallowed ground after we did cold water ablutions (bathing in water, and cleansing the body before current of water prays the gods and Buddha, and cleaning mind and body) in this pond. In addition, in to 1704 (Hoei 1), the Oshino-mura whole area became Shogunate direct control territory. Whenever people made place that dried up field, and repeated disasters and population of village increased, we moved to low land in sequence and came to live. Until approximately 50 years ago, we used halfway up a mountain of neighboring mountains now as field.


Modern - present age

In 1875 (Christian era 1875), former Shibokusa-mura was merged with old Uchino village and became Oshino-mura. Originally Shibokusa district that was the bottom of the lake was place unsuitable for the making of rice. They pushed forward cleaning business, and irrigation canal was maintained in village, and village became gradually rich. After World War II, tourism that utilized natural resource represented by Oshino Hakkai became popular. FANUC Corporation moves in 1984 (Showa 59), and population of village increases. We continue up to the present day.
